Tofu Pudding - A Favorite Childhood Treat
Hot tofu pudding, also known as tào phớ, isn't just a Vietnamese dish - it's also a traditional treat of the Chinese community in Vietnam. Being of Chinese descent, born and raised in the Chinese quarter of Saigon, this has been my favorite treat since childhood, all the way to now (and probably forever after too). If you ask what the hottest sweet treat was for kids back in the 80s and 90s, before milk tea ever arrived - you'd get quite a few answers pointing straight to hot tofu pudding. Hot tofu pudding is made from soy milk, sugar, coconut milk, and a few seasonings like salt and vanilla. To make it, the soy milk is boiled first, then combined with a mixture of coconut milk and sugar to create a sweet, fragrant soy milk base. Finally, the warm tofu pudding is poured into bowls or cups and eaten hot. Hot tofu pudding is a very nutritious dish, especially for vegetarians or those who don't eat meat. Soy milk is an excellent source of protein, helping to strengthen the body. It's also considered a nourishing food for skin and hair. Hot tofu pudding is also loved for its light, cooling sweetness, which suits the hot weather so well. For people living in Vietnam, it's an inseparable part of everyday life. You can find it at street corners and street food stalls everywhere. In short, hot tofu pudding is a traditional Vietnamese street food, loved for its light sweetness and high nutritional value. It's an indispensable dish in the daily life of Vietnamese people. At its core, this is simply a wonderful dish - tasty, nourishing, and cheap - and I really can't find a single thing to complain about. I truly, truly hope tào phớ keeps being carried on and refined by street vendors everywhere, keeping its traditional flavor while always growing a little more appealing, so that a "fan" like me can keep sinking into that satisfying taste of Vietnamese-Chinese cuisine forever.
